Orenburg actor Viktor Balabanov has put forward his candidacy for the post of chairman of the Union of Cinematographers.
13.12.2017 в 10:50
Nikita Mikhalkov has held this position for the last 20 years.
The day before yesterday, on December 11, the X Congress of the Union of Cinematographers of Russia was held in Moscow, at which the filmmakers chose their chairman. mk.ru . The permanent leader of the Union was Nikita Mikhalkov, who ran for this position again at this congress. The appearance of Viktor Balabanov, an independent actor of theater and cinema, a native of Orenburg, was a complete surprise.
Viktor Balabanov was born in Orenburg in 1952. He served from 1978 to 1979 and from 1996 to 2006 at the Orenburg Drama Theater.Gorky, played many roles. Since 2006, he has been mainly filming TV series and movies in Moscow. Balabanov is known for his accurate portrayal of historical characters. So, he played Molotov in more than 10 works, and also starred in the roles of Lenin and Khrushchev.
As expected, the elderly filmmakers of the Congress of Cinematographers did not vote for the self-nominated candidate, but voted for Mikhalkov, who has reigned for two decades.
We decided to find out how Viktor Balabanov's theatrical colleagues in Orenburg reacted to this news. Alexander Papykin, an actor of the Orenburg Drama Theater named after M. Gorky, Honored Artist of Russia, was pleased with this news.:
"I've known him for many years, worked in the theater. The news is wonderful, and changes are needed. If Sobchak is running for president, then why can't Balabanov run for chairman of the Union of Cinematographers? As they say, the flag is in his hands. I know him as an actor and as a person - a very worthy candidate, he shoots a lot. I don't think it's a joke. Still, he has an adventurous streak, he's the kind of guy who can smash through an iron door with his forehead. Moreover, there is always the "what if..." factor - even if he doesn't get to the position of chairman, but at least gets to the board of cinematographers, it's already good. Moreover, he does not lose touch with Orenburg, he maintains communication with the actors and the team."

During Mikhalkov's re-election, an independent candidate was found in the Union of Cinematographers
Balabanov is against

Actor Viktor Balabanov proposed his candidacy for the post of chairman of the Union of Cinematographers of the Russian Federation at the X Congress. In defiance of Nikita Mikhalkov, who reigned for 20 years. But the elderly filmmakers didn't even let him say two words — they hissed and clapped: who is he?! They began to discuss how much time to give him: five minutes is too fat, two is enough. Mikhalkov himself seemed taken aback by such an outburst, but he was also pleased: at least some semblance of alternative elections. One arrogant delegate contemptuously called Balabanov a "great actor." And he spoke fluently about his roles in films, a dozen Molotovs, two Khrushchevs and one and a half Lenins. Only one vote was cast in his support.

After the congress, the delegates were invited to the festive tables. However, most of them started helping themselves while their colleagues were still talking from the stage. So we came to the empty plates. That's where we talked to Viktor Balabanov.
— Some people think that you are a paid Cossack and your exit is specially planned.…
— People often judge others by themselves. They can't figure out what's hurting someone. I didn't want to move out. I had no such thoughts. Look at what's going on! The delegates are eating and drinking, while their colleagues are also talking about their problems. It shouldn't be like this. Let people have their say, and then hold your own elections. Campaigning and the cult of personality have always been repugnant to me. In the acting profession, it's important to keep a person inside yourself so that you have something to say to people.
— You were applauded, kicked off the podium.
— Yes, it was strong. But I perceive everything through love. If you think that everyone around you is a bastard, they didn't let you speak, then the person will lock himself in. Mikhalkov said: "Why raise the issue if it won't be resolved?" Either we try to change something, or we give up. They tell me: "And you go to Putin and tell him everything." Yes, I was in his waiting room! I'm the chairman of the local branch of the Yabloko party.
— Why did you tell me from the podium that you have four children and six grandchildren?
— People don't know who's who. By the way, I did everything to prevent my children from becoming artists. It's a dependent profession. I didn't even choose an actress for my wife. Otherwise, our children would have spent their days in the theater and would have followed this path. Choice has always played a crucial role for me. After I watched Hamlet with Smoktunovsky, I decided to become an actor. And I once came to Moscow from Orenburg to shoot "The Real Dad." I am in the credits, but the role, in fact, is not. It was cut after one of the players hit an opponent at the World Cup. According to the plot of the film, Mikhail Porechenkov, to whom I was a rival, also had to punch me.
— Do you work in the theater in Orenburg?
— I served there after the Irkutsk Theater School. "Worked" is from the word "slave". I spent 12 Christmas trees there, but the administration cheated. The accordion player then came drunk and shouted: "Balabanov, give me the money back!" I had to borrow it and give it to him. But that was a long time ago. Then I went to Sarapul, where I met my better half at a Komsomol meeting. I told them everything from the podium so that people would know what kind of baggage I had, and I named my roles. There are 126 of them. At the same time, I am a beggar. Buying a coat or a fur coat for my wife is a big problem. We're barely making ends meet.
— And where did you play Molotov and one and a half Lenin?..
— Once upon a time, Polish director Jerzy Hoffman came to Orenburg to shoot The Captain's Daughter. I attended his creative meeting, told him that I was rehearsing Petya Trofimov in The Cherry Orchard and how impressed I was by the monologue about slavery that our director wants to erase. I invited Hoffman to the play, and he came. Later, he learned that he was looking for an actor to play Lenin in the film "The Battle of Warsaw. 1920", I found it through Polish websites. And I know a little Polish. My grandmother was Polish. I haven't seen her, though. She was most likely poisoned in 1936. She was a cook at the Zenith school, and she spoke with an accent. I reminded Hoffmann of our meeting, and he approved me. Then Rauf Kubaev wrote a script where the authority on the zone plays in Lenin's play. So much for one and a half. And I played Konchalovsky's first Molotov in the Inner Circle. Since 2006, I have played more roles in films than in the theater. The penultimate one was in Kirill Serebrennikov's The Golden Cockerel, where I played the successor of Tsar Dodon, a general, a law enforcer who, at the request of the people, took power into his own hands. Who is this nowadays?.. I played this usurper.
P.S. While we were talking, Nikita Mikhalkov took the floor during the banquet to say once again: "None of us holds on to power."
